Astrid is a Hawaii native, born and raised on the island of Kaua’i. She embraced hula and tahitian dancing at the age of 8, when she started dancing with hula halau Na Hula O Ka’ohikukapulani. Astrid’s dancing experience from childhood throughout high school encompasses Keiki Tahitian Competitions, Tahiti Fete Competitions, exhibitions for the Merrie Monarch Festival, participation in Aloha Week Festivals, as well as a professional dancer at Smith’s Tropical Paradise Luau on the island of Kaua’i. After graduation, Astrid attended college at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) in Greeley. As a member of the Hawaii Club at UNC, ‘Ha’aheo O Hawai’i’, Astrid remained actively involved with hula and tahitian dancing. She was the Hula Dance Chairperson for a couple years, where she taught, danced and choreographed the hula/tahitian dances for the club’s always sold out Annual Luaus. Additionally, Astrid would occassionally give back to the community by dancing for local events when requested. Astrid is ecstatic to be able to share the polynesian dances again as a member of Kalama. She is an accountant by day, and a polynesian dancer by night.
