Meet the Dancers ~Puatea~

Heather is a Colorado native who graduated from Denver School of the Arts where she studied music, and then ventured to the Big Island for a college education. After graduating from the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 2004, Heather has missed the aloha of Hawaii and it’s people a great deal. Heather began dancing with Kalama in May of 2008, looking for a way to get back into shape after having a baby. It soon became more than an “after baby workout” and Heather became a dedicated member of the Halau. Performing with Kalama is her way of sharing the beauty of the islands with others who also miss Hawaii or perhaps have never been.  Dancing with Kalama has exposed her to a wonderful group of ladies as well as dances. She enjoys the challenge of the Poi in Maori, the subtle movements of Samoan, the flashiness of Tahitian, and the soft flow of Hula dances as well as learning tid bits of history and culture. Heather is Gary’s wife and they have three beautiful children. She hopes her children will see this window into their own culture and hopefully pursue dance as a way to learn about and share their own cutlure with others

Meet the Dancers ~Gary~

Gary was raised in Marina, California where his Hawaiian family resides. He attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo for a few years where he played baseball and learned about his culture. Now residing in Colorado, Gary is one of Kalama’s male dancer spreading his Aloha and giving the ladies something to look at. He has a very warm personality and loves to put a smile on everyone’s face. Gary also has a busy family life and enjoys his motorcycle rides through the Rockies.

Meet our Dancers! ~Dani Lei~

Was born and raised in Waimanalo, Hawai’i on the island of ‘Oahu. I am of Hawaiian, Portuguese, Filipino and Japanese descent. Been dancing all my life — and have also danced under the instruction of Kumu Hula Chinky Mahoe with Hula Halau Kawaili’ula and Kumu Hula Rance Like with Hula Halau Lei Hulu O Hawaii…. My culture is very important to me – which is why I do what I can to give back and spread the Aloha Spirit through ‘olelo, hula e mele. I love it when I can bring a minoaka to someone’s face through either of these avenues. When not dancing, I am a IT Analyst/Database Developer for Xcel Energy in downtown Denver. After dancing with the Tuilaepa’s, I’ve been searching for a halau to dance with and I am glad I found Hula Halau Kalama. I am learning so much from these wonderful wahine o Kalama.

E noho iho i ke opu weuweu, mai ho`oki`eki`e – I beleive this is when you can truly grow as a human being – stay ha’aha’a e Nana ka maka;
ho`olohe ka pepeiao; pa`a ka waha so you can see in your heart what our kupuna is teaching.
