Most of the classes are taught by Glenda (Aiwa). The structure of classes include warm-up with technique specific to type of class, drills, and choreography. Choreography varies from Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced class. Aiwa teaches her Hula classes with the ILIMA style of dance that was taught by Kumu Kas Nakamura from Halau Pulama Mau Ke Aloha Ka Ohana Ilima- MD. She teaches her Tahitian classes with styles from Kumu Mireille Thornton “MA” from The Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale FL. Mireille’s techniques are a fusion of modern with traditional and ancient style elements. MA would bring in teachers from the islands to work with the dancers and teach the dancers. The show would be changed every year. She has hired professionals from Polynesian Culture Center and from Tahiti (ex. Lorenzo~ Le Grande Ballet). Many dancers who have had the chance to work with Kumu Kas and Mireille Thornton are very blessed to have that opportunity.
Throughout the year Kalama students (children and adults) have the ability to participate in public performances throughout Colorado and recitals to show family and friends. Students also have the ability to purchase costumes and even learn how to make their own costumes with different workshops that we offer. Advanced students have the ability to join the “Performance Group”. This is done by instructor selection.
Please make sure that you dress in comfortable and loose fit clothing, bring water, and bring necessary implements. Get ready to have FUN, to learn, to exercise, and to meet our OHANA.
There is a $25.00 registration fee for EACH new student. Registration fees include class pareu and practice CD.
