Most of the classes are taught by Glenda (Aiwa).  The structure of classes include warm-up with technique specific to type of class, drills, and choreography.  Choreography varies from Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced class.  Aiwa teaches her Hula classes with the ILIMA style of dance that was taught by Kumu Kas Nakamura from Halau Pulama Mau Ke Aloha Ka Ohana Ilima- MD.  She teaches her Tahitian classes with styles from Kumu Mireille Thornton “MA” from The Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale FL.  Mireille’s techniques are a fusion of modern with traditional and ancient style elements.  MA would bring in teachers from the islands to work with the dancers and teach the dancers.  The show would be changed every year.  She has hired professionals from Polynesian Culture Center and from Tahiti (ex. Lorenzo~ Le Grande Ballet).  Many dancers who have had the chance to work with Kumu Kas and Mireille Thornton are very blessed to have that opportunity.

Throughout the year Kalama students (children and adults) have the ability to participate in public performances throughout Colorado and recitals to show family and friends.  Students also have the ability to purchase costumes and even learn how to make their own costumes with different workshops that we offer.  Advanced students have the ability to join the “Performance Group”.  This is done by instructor selection.
Please make sure that you dress in comfortable and loose fit clothing, bring water, and bring necessary implements.  Get ready to have FUN, to learn, to exercise, and to meet our OHANA.
Aiwa has more than 15 years of teaching and performance experience.  Aiwa is also group fitness and personal training certified.

  3. Hi, my name is Diane. I have lived many years in Hawaii but never had the time to learn the dance. My 8 year old son and I just moved to Denver and I am interested in both of us trying a beginner class. I was wondering if you have beginner classes on Saturday that occur about the same time, one for me and a male beginner class for him? Also, since we live in Evergreen, in the front range, are there any classes that might be closer to us on on the West side of Denver?

I’m not sure if you’d be interested in expanding your knowledge base but I am looking for Halau’s and Kumu’s that would like to further their knowledge base in Hula Kahiko. My goal is to help others perpetuate the Hawaiian culture through Hula Kahiko. I would love to come and do a workshop for you if you are interested. Please feel free to contact me at 760-807-6790.
